Background of the Study
Environmental education is essential for fostering awareness and action on environmental issues, especially among younger generations. In Lafia Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, primary schools play a crucial role in shaping the environmental attitudes and behaviors of children. With growing concerns about climate change, deforestation, and pollution, it is imperative to integrate environmental education into the curriculum to encourage sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. This study seeks to investigate the current state of environmental education in primary schools in Lafia, focusing on the content of environmental education programs, teacher preparedness, and the level of student engagement in environmental activities (Ogunleye & Mohammed, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although environmental education has been acknowledged as a critical component of the curriculum in many Nigerian schools, its implementation in Lafia’s primary schools remains inconsistent. Many schools lack the necessary resources, trained teachers, and appropriate curriculum to effectively teach environmental concepts. As a result, students may not fully understand the importance of environmental conservation, leading to limited environmental awareness and action. This study aims to assess the state of environmental education in Lafia’s primary schools and identify the factors that hinder its effective delivery.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To evaluate the extent to which environmental education is integrated into the primary school curriculum in Lafia.
• To assess the preparedness of teachers in delivering environmental education in Lafia’s primary schools.
• To explore the level of student engagement in environmental activities within primary schools in Lafia.
1.4 Research Questions
• To what extent is environmental education integrated into the primary school curriculum in Lafia?
• How prepared are teachers to deliver effective environmental education in primary schools in Lafia?
• What is the level of student engagement in environmental activities in primary schools in Lafia?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Environmental education is inadequately integrated into the primary school curriculum in Lafia.
• H2: Teachers in Lafia’s primary schools are inadequately prepared to deliver environmental education.
• H3: There is a low level of student engagement in environmental activities in primary schools in Lafia.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will provide insights into the current state of environmental education in primary schools in Lafia and highlight the challenges and opportunities for improvement. This research will be valuable to education policymakers, school administrators, and NGOs working on environmental education. It will also contribute to the development of more effective environmental education programs that can inspire the next generation to become active participants in environmental conservation (Ogunleye & Mohammed, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on environmental education in primary schools in Lafia Local Government Area. Limitations include potential challenges in obtaining accurate data from schools regarding curriculum content and teacher preparedness.
